Heigh-ho...
Crowley was driving about the city in the Bentley. Rather randomly, if truth be told. He didn't really have a destination in mind, he was just getting to know the place. Taking note of anything that looked interesting, or anything he might want to revisit. There was a restaurant, there was an electronics store, there was a...

There was a bookstore. A very strangely familiar-looking bookstore.

The Bentley screeched to a halt, Crowley unheeding of any commotion he might be causing. After a few moments, he pulled over and parked, sliding out of the Bentley slowly. He stood there for a minute before stepping up to the door. He glanced at the sign, the illegible listing of the store's hours, just like the one he'd seen a thousand times elsewhere.

"I'm going to bloody well regret this..."

He pushed the door open and stepped inside, letting it close behind him.

"Well, yes, I know that."

He finished off his glass of wine and refilled it before going on.

"Ever since you were... you know, taken back," he frowned, "Well, not you but you know what I mean," he said, deciding to give up on making the distinction clear. He took a deep breath. "I... er, what I mean to say is, well, if you were dragged back to Hell, what would you tell me to do? Especially supposing I met another version of you..." He sighed, rubbing his forehead. "I'm not making much sense, am I?"
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 14th, 2006 04:24 am (UTC)
Crowley winced a bit and took a drink of his wine. "I'd tell you to get on with life, b'cause I wouldn't be coming back. S'why I'm moving out here, to avoid getting dragged back. I know they'll get 'round to it sooner or later. Make up some load of tosh about something they can recall me for, then once I'm down there... Well, they were really, really not happy about the whole Apocalypse thing."

He shuddered a little, thinking about what would be in store for him if they ever got their hands on him.
bookish_angel on March 14th, 2006 04:57 am (UTC)
"Yes, I know," Aziraphale refilled their glasses yet again. "If I were to go back to Heaven... It wouldn't be exactly the same, of course, but I don't think I'd be ever going back to Earth." That was a depressing thought that he tried not to think about too much, especially since he'd left.

"I know that that's what I'd tell you, if it had been me instead... but... but I wouldn't be in for an eternity of torture," he said bitterly. "It would be... well, you know what it would be like, but still... not the same."
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 14th, 2006 06:58 am (UTC)
"You'd be bored. I'd be anything but," Crowley muttered, shaking his head. "Doesn't matter. If I got dragged down, I'd be in for the eternity of torture anyway, so it'd be nice to at least be able to think that maybe you weren't miserable."

Not that he liked thinking about the idea of being dragged down in the least. He'd really rather just finish moving and forget about the whole unpleasant notion. He drained his glass in one go.
bookish_angel on March 14th, 2006 07:44 am (UTC)
"I see." Aziraphale was busy with his own glass of wine, and Crowley was fully capable of refilling his own glass. Probably.

"Not that there's anything I could have done. Or do now. I mean, it wouldn't do much if I went down and knocked on the door and asked if they could let you go please. Not much good, at any rate." The idea of him in Hell was one that he'd never contemplated before. It was just something that he found impossible to imagine.

They could do a lot of things to Crowley, but there was that one thing that they couldn't take away from him... and that was the knowledge that Aziraphale was in a much better place, and maybe even that he was happy. Of course, it was one thing to think so, it was something else entirely to hear that sort of sentiment from Crowley himself. A Crowley... whatever.

"So..." he said idly, staring down into his now-empty glass. That subject had been explored well enough, and he was having trouble thinking of a new one.
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 15th, 2006 05:37 am (UTC)
Crowley managed to get his glass refilled without too terribly much fumbling.

"I've been going t'this little club a bit away from town," he said randomly, taking a drink. "No clue how I got there the first time. One minute in London, next minute not, though that started happening more often once I found my way out in the first place. I was on my way to a club anyway, and it was a club, so I just went ahead. Decided I liked it well enough, even with the bloody great things crashing through skylights, so I came back."
bookish_angel on March 15th, 2006 07:28 am (UTC)
"Things?" Aziraphale asked. "What sort of things? Of course, with how things are around here, one can't be too surprised."
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 15th, 2006 03:16 pm (UTC)
"Big snarling wolfy things with wings. Tim told me the name for 'em, but I can't remember it right now," Crowley replied, making a dismissive gesture with one hand.
bookish_angel on March 15th, 2006 08:02 pm (UTC)
"Oh my. I do hope that they don't do anything like that here," Aziraphale said, glancing towards the front. The mess that it would make... Terrible.

He finished off the rest of his glass and reached over for the wine bottle, noting that it was nearly empty.
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 16th, 2006 05:00 am (UTC)
"You can just miracle it fixed," Crowley pointed out, finishing his drink. He poured the last of the bottle out with slightly exaggerated care.
bookish_angel on March 17th, 2006 05:57 am (UTC)
Azirphale drained the rest of his glass. He was definitely getting tipsy now.

"Well, yes, but..." He didn't really like the notion of watching his nice books getting all torn up like that. "Imagine if it were your car getting torn up. That's what it would be like."
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 17th, 2006 08:05 am (UTC)
"My car did get torn up," Crowley reminded him, lifting his glass to take a drink. "Back during the whole end of the world business. Utter loss. Wrecked. Adam fixed it, I still don't know how he managed that. Then again, he's the AntiChrist, and I'm not."
bookish_angel on March 17th, 2006 04:56 pm (UTC)
"Yes, I know that," Aziraphale replied patiently as he worked on getting the second bottle of wine open. "I was just being...um... metaphorical, yes, that's it. For that matter, my shop burned down completely, but I still have all of my books, plus a few extras," he said, gesturing around vaguely.
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 18th, 2006 02:28 am (UTC)
Crowley peered at him a bit suspiciously. "You can't trust metaphors. They're sneaky buggers. Anyway, I've still got my car, too. ...What were we talking about again?"
bookish_angel on March 18th, 2006 05:10 am (UTC)
"Er, before metaphors?" Aziraphale finally managed to get the bottle open. "Dunno... Something about strange creatures. Sounded like demons of some sort, to me."
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 19th, 2006 01:49 am (UTC)
"Right... Wolfy..things. Not demons. I know a demon when I see one crash through a skylight, and they weren't," Crowley replied, shoving his glass towards Aziraphale for a refill.

"Not everything's a demon, just because it's nasty-looking. There are more things in Nexus and Earth, Aziraphale.... Something or other. Can't recall how the last bit went. Something philosophical."
bookish_angel on March 19th, 2006 06:14 am (UTC)
"I'm aware of that, yes," Aziraphale said as he filled up Crowley's glass. "It's just that the first thing I thought of was a hellhound with wings. Probably because you said they were snarling and all..."

He stared contemplatively at his own empty glass.

"'There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.' S'from Hamlet. Act one, scene five, I do believe."
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 20th, 2006 12:29 am (UTC)
"Oh yeah, that one. Depressin' play, Hamlet. I told him not to write it, y'know. I said to him, 'Will, nobody's goin' t'want to see a play where everybody dies. People go to plays t'get away from reality.' Jus' goes to show, even I'm not right all the time," Crowley said thoughtfully, picking up his glass and drinking.
bookish_angel on March 20th, 2006 07:46 am (UTC)
"Things are different... Were different, then. But of course, it's still a literary classic, isn' it? Humans are strange sometimes."

He reached over to pour himself another glass of wine. It took him a few seconds to get things properly aligned.

"D'you think we'll need more to drink?" He asked, looking over at the bottle of gin.
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 21st, 2006 03:23 am (UTC)
"Amen," Crowley muttered. "Inna manner of speaking, o' course."

He sipped his drink and glanced at the bottles. "Might. Dunno."
bookish_angel on March 21st, 2006 04:25 am (UTC)
"I'm feeling much better now, actually," Aziraphale commented. Of course, he couldn't exactly remember why he'd been uncomfortable in the first place, but that was the whole point, wasn't it?
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 21st, 2006 07:50 am (UTC)
"Yeah. Me, too," Crowley agreed, taking another drink. The nagging voice in his mind was all but gone. This was Aziraphale. From his dimension or not, what did that matter? And now that he wasn't bothering about that, he felt better than he had in months. The angel sitting across from him, alcohol sitting in front of him, all was right with the world.

"Have you read the book about us?"

Random conversation-starter, of course, since he'd utterly lost the thread of what they'd been talking about before.
bookish_angel on March 22nd, 2006 05:16 am (UTC)
"Yes... It is odd, reading about oneself like that. I mean, it's all there..."

He vaguely remembered that there was at least one thing in the book that he wasn't particularly pleased with being in print. Crowley had probably been quite amused to read that Aziraphale had said 'fuck'. The circumstances had been extremely difficult, but still...
Anthony J. Crowleyh8_ineffability on March 22nd, 2006 06:27 am (UTC)
"Very weird, yes. Kind of interesting, though, to find out what all was happening with people when I wasn't around," Crowley said, waving a hand idly. "AND what they were thinkin', sometimes. All sorts of insight. I'm ver' cross about that bit at the end, though. I was really onto somethin' there, and then bam. All gone. Don't even remember it now I've read that I thought it inna first place."
bookish_angel on March 22nd, 2006 07:50 am (UTC)
"At least you have it written down now," Azirphale pointed out as he sipped his wine. "Ineffability, just like I'm always telling you..."
